Coastal Croatia: Hidden Gems Accessible By Boat

May 5, 2025

If you’re dreaming of turquoise sea, ancient villages, sunset swims, secret bays, and hidden gems that most travellers never see, exploring coastal Croatia by boat is the way to go.

Many of the region’s most rewarding destinations are only accessible from the sea—making a boat charter one of the best ways to experience the true magic of the Dalmatian coast.

Island hopping in Croatia is a bucket list experience, and with so many boats and routes to choose from, it’s worth doing a bit of research or reaching out to a local expert, to make sure your trip matches your budget, group and style.

In this post, we’re sharing one of our favourite multi-day routes featuring hidden gems accessible by boat. And if it sounds like the trip for you, Anchor Croatia can help you make it happen.

Brač

The third-largest island in Croatia, Brač is best known for its white stone (used in Diocletian’s Palace and allegedly the White House), and the iconic Zlatni Rat beach. But its real beauty lies in the lesser-known eastern bays, where turquoise water meets lush pine forest. Anchor in a peaceful cove for a swim, then head to one of our favourite restaurants in the Adriatic—only accessible by boat. They’ll meet you by dinghy and bring you ashore for an unforgettable seafood dinner, with views of your sailboat floating in the bay below. The tuna steak and local wine list alone are worth the stop.

Hvar

With ancient roots and modern energy, Hvar is a cultural gem and a hotspot for food lovers and adventure seekers. Once an important Venetian trading post, Hvar Town now blends historic charm with world-class hospitality.

Pulling into the Riva by boat as the promenade buzzes around you is a bucket list moment. Explore stone alleyways, sip cocktails on medieval rooftops, hike up to the Spanish fortress for views over the islands, or book inland tours to lavender fields, vineyards, and mountain trails. There’s always something happening on Hvar, and docking here puts you right in the middle of it.

You can also take the opportunity to sail around Pakleni Islands, and gems like Red Rocks or Blue Lagoon that are only accessible by boat.

Korčula

Korčula is often called “Little Dubrovnik” thanks to its fortified old town, winding streets, and romantic setting. But what really sets it apart is its connection to tradition. Locals here still perform centuries-old dances, and many families continue to produce olive oil, honey, and wine in small batches. A visit to a local farm offers a glimpse of this slower lifestyle, complete with gin tasting experience, wine tour, and the island’s finest natural products, its our favourite hidden gem on the island. Korčula is a dream for anyone who loves food, history, and experiencing a town that feels like it’s been frozen in time.

Vis

Remote, rugged, and full of mystery, Vis was off-limits to foreigners until 1989 due to its strategic military location. That isolation preserved its authenticity—and today, it’s a sanctuary for those looking to escape the crowds. The beaches are clean and wild, the snorkelling is incredible, and the food is rustic in the best way. Whether you’re sipping wine in a quiet vineyard or eating grilled fish in a konoba with a daily menu, Vis is where you go to slow down and soak up the essence of coastal life. On of our favourite hidden gems here is a wine tasting in an old military tunnel. You can also experience Stiniva Cove and the Blue Cave, which are only accessible by boat.

Šolta

Just a short sail from Split, Šolta is often skipped—and that’s a mistake. This small island is full of surprise. Charming stone villages, secluded coves, cliff jumping, and some of the best swimming on the coast. Don’t miss the Kontesa shipwreck site, where you explore a sunken former WW2 vessel so shallow that you can walk on it in some places- an epic snorkeling location. With a handful of standout restaurants and no large resorts, Šolta gives you a taste of Dalmatia the way locals like it–quiet, unpolished, and full of character.

Our Favourite Route:

Split > Brač > Hvar > Korčula > Vis > Šolta > Split
